Mindfulness-Based Eating
Disorder Recovery (MBEDR)
"Mindfulness is the capacity to pay
attention to the present moment, just as it is, with
awareness and acceptance. Mindfulness arises
naturally when we let go of all the things we usually
do with the mind and tune-in to our present
experience. By cultivating mindfulness, we
become more aware, less reactive and have more choice
in how we respond to thoughts and mood states."
Research indicates that mindfulness-based
practices have been effective in alleviating a wide range of
physical and psychological issues. Clinicians and
researchers are applying mindfulness to the treatment of
disordered eating and finding that mindfulness offers a
powerful and unique approach to healing.
The Mindfulness-Based Eating Disorder
Recovery Program is a short-term, skills-based program
designed to enhance traditional treatment approaches by
teaching clients mindfulness skills and offering practice
in a variety of settings. Through individual
sessions, mindfulness groups and yoga classes, clients
learn and practice skills that facilitate:
increasing self awareness
interrupting unconscious eating patterns
responding rather then reacting
enjoying intuitive eating
experiencing pleasure in physical activity
releasing of bad body thoughts
developing a new freedom with food and eating
Components of
Program:
Individual
sessions: 6-8 individual sessions aimed
at learning, applying and practicing mindfulness to the
challenges of disordered eating.
Mindfulness
Meditation Group: a 6 - session group
that combines mindfulness and cognitive therapy and can be
applied to any emotional problems or habit patterns.
Mindful Yoga:
referrals to appropriate community-based classes and
teachers that emphasize using yoga as a means to making
peace with the body, bringing balance to body AND mind,
finding and respecting personal limits and discovering the
joy of pleasure in the body.
Mindful Eating: opportunities to practice guided mindful eating in
individual sessions and in a lunch-time group.
The MBEDRP is not a substitute for but an
adjunct to traditional treatment approaches. The
program is most appropriate for clients free from acute
symptoms, in the preparation stage of change and ready to
take action.
